Breaking In Your Shiny New Car Gently So It Lasts Longer
Investing in a new vehicle for traveling the streets of Springfield, VA is
a big decision, and you want to do what you can to ensure you can travel to
Clifton, VA and Fairfax Station, VA for many years to come. Make sure you regularly
stop in and see our trained technicians at Burke Centre Automotive, and use
these tips to help your car, truck or SUV last longer.
- When the vehicle is new, make sure you heed the advice of the manufacturer
and be patient during the initial break-in period. This is typically considered
the first 1,000 miles driven, but always follow the recommendations made by
the manufacturer. During this time, keep your pedal off the medal and stay
below 55 miles per hour.
- Also during the break-in period, do not allow the vehicle to idle for long
periods of time, avoid towing trailers, boats or other items and accelerate
slowly keeping the RPMs below 3,000. This warning is not forever — just
for the break-in period.
- Revving the vehicle's engine during the start-up will add years of
wear-and-tear to the vehicle in a matter of moment — even more if the
weather in Clifton, VA is cold. The most wear-and-tear on the drive train
occurs within the first 10 to 20 miles, so let the vehicle warm-up thoroughly
before dropping the hammer.
- Reduce the impact and use of the engine by putting the vehicle into neutral
while at traffic lights. Even though your foot is on the brake, if the engine
is in-gear, it is still prepared to move the vehicle and will cause unnecessary
wear.
- The wear-and-tear on your vehicle increases dramatically when you make short
trips. Combine your errands and making one trip and using your vehicle more
efficiently will keep your vehicle engine happier longer.
