Required Official Virginia State Safety Inspection Procedure for Your Car

According to Virginia state law, each Virginia vehicle must be inspected on an annual basis by an inspection station. There are about 4,200 inspection stations statewide, including many new car dealerships and repair garages. Each inspection station will display a large white sign with blue lettering designating that station as an official inspection station.

The procedure for Virginia motor vehicle safety inspection each inspection station must follow includes the following steps:

Remove the old inspection sticker.
Inspect brakes.
Inspect parking brake.
Inspect headlights and all other lights.
Inspect signal devices.
Inspect steering and suspension.
Inspect tires, wheels, and rims.
Inspect mirror.
Inspect horn.
Inspect windshield and other glass.
Inspect windshield wiper and defroster.
Inspect exhaust system.
Inspect license tags.
Inspect hood and area under the hood.
Inspect air pollution control system.
Inspect driverís seat and seat belts.
Inspect air bag and airbag readiness light.
Inspect doors at the right and left side of the driverís seat.
Inspect fuel system.
Inspect floor plan.
Issue sticker. If approved, the approval sticker is placed on the vehicle and a pink copy of the certificate is given to the owner of the vehicle.

Any defects found during the inspection process must be corrected and the vehicle must be reinspected within 15 days.
